Level 6 Maths Topics

Year 6 primarily covers Levels 4 and 5 of the national curriculum, so many topics will be new territory for children taking the Level 6 national curriculum tests.

There are a lot of topics to cover at Level 6 - below is a full list of the National Curriculum at Level 6. It will give you an idea of what kind of skills are required:

  • Four rules of fractions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division)
  • Working with mixed numbers and top heavy fractions
  • Percentage of a quantity and finding one quantity as a percentage of another
  • Percentage increase and decrease
  • Converting between fractions, decimals and percentages and ability to place in order of size
  • Ability to work with sequences, including using a rule to find the next or previous number and ability to use nth term of a sequence
  • Work with decimals – add, subtract, multiply, multiply and divide by 10, 100, 1000
  • Solve more complex word problems, including money problems
  • Understand multiples and factors
  • Use ratio to solve problems and split numbers into a ratio
  • Understand the rules of negative numbers
  • Square numbers, cubed numbers and square roots
Algebra
  • Collect like terms
  • Substitute into equations
  • Solve equations, including equations with unknowns on both sides of the equals sign, e.g. 3x + 4 = 2x – 2
  • Use the trial and improvement method
  • Form an equation from given information

Data Handling
  • Mean
  • Median
  • Mode
  • Range
  • Probability
  • Interpret a line graph, bar chart, pie chart or scatter diagram
  • Complete a two-way table
  • Understand conversion graphs
Geometry and Measures
  • Constructions, including constructing circles using a set of compasses
  • Coordinates – plotting and reading
  • Basic understanding of the equations of a line on a graph, e.g. x = 4 and y = x
  • Recognition of 2D and 3D shapes
  • Area, including area of a circle, area of a trapezium and area of compound shapes
  • Perimeter
  • Volume
  • Angles on a straight line, at a point, in a triangle and in a quadrilateral
  • Angle properties on parallel lines
  • Understand symmetry and rotational symmetry
  • Transformations – reflections, rotations around a point, enlargements (enlarging by a scale factor and centre of enlargement)
